The Pros (And Cons) of Buying a Beverage Refrigerator

Did you know the global beverage market is worth over $1.5 billion dollars? As humans, we sure do love our fancy drinks! But have you ever wondered if the drinks you regularly consume could be better somehow?

These days modern technology can deliver you a beverage at the perfect temperature and you won't even have to leave the room. This magical technology is called a beverage refrigerator. But it might be difficult to decide whether it's worth the investment.

That's where this handy pros and cons list comes in! Keep reading to learn if a beverage refrigerator is a right choice for you.

What Is a Beverage Refrigerator?

A beverage refrigerator is an appliance designed to keep your favorite drinks at the perfect temperature. They are generally smaller than your average refrigerator and provide easier access designed around bottles and cans. This sort of specialization can be highly useful to those who drink lots of beverages or who entertain frequently.

Now, if you're someone who tends to drink a specific type of beverage then it might be better to invest in something more specialized. For wine drinkers, it could be a good idea to look into wine fridges that have more specific controls to keep your wine in the ideal state. If you like both, there are wine and beverage combo fridges to suit you too!

But back to the beverage refrigerators! There are two different types of beverage refrigerator models that you can get. Let's take a look at your two options so you can make the best choice for your home and lifestyle.

Freestanding Model

These units are like they sound - they're meant to stand alone without any other construction needed. This means they can be easier to place in your home and makes them more mobile if you want to change where the beverage refrigerator is more frequently.

While they have more mobility to move about your space depending on how you entertain and live, this does have some drawbacks. For one, they generally need more space around them as they need venting room. This is usually at least two inches along the side and three or more inches of room in the back.

So, if you're someone who wants to put it under the counter or inside a cabinet when it's not floating around your home you will have to be careful. Without proper ventilation, your refrigerator won't work properly and its life cycle will be shortened overall. They tend to be a little cheaper but keep in mind they need more space.

Built-in Unit

This type of unit has a vent in the front which means it doesn't need the same amount of space as a freestanding unit. However, these products typically aren't designed to look nice as a freestanding unit. You sacrifice mobility for better looks and easier ventilation.

These built-in refrigerators are a great statement piece and an excellent accompaniment to a wet bar. If you plan at all to put your beverage refrigerator inside a cabinet or along a wall you might be better off investing in a built-in unit. Of course, they are typically more expensive so it's important to weigh what matters according to your lifestyle.

The Pros

Now it's time to get down to the decision making process. By looking at this list of pros you can start to think about how a beverage fridge would work in your home and whether it would be a great addition to your leisure activities. After that, we'll discuss some of the cons and give you a final verdict.

Easier Entertaining

When you're entertaining it can be hard to keep everybody happy and occupied. You may not want everyone congregating in your kitchen especially if you've invited several people over. Having a fridge in your living room or another area of your home means people will be spread out and enjoying themselves.

There also won't be a backup of people trying to get into the fridge or sorting through all of your food in your kitchen trying to find the drink they want. So you can give yourself a little more privacy while still satisfying everyone.

Extra Space

Having a party often means buying extra food and drinks which can take up a lot of space in your refrigerator. Especially with the recent popularity of smaller homes and counter-depth refrigerators, you may not actually have tons of space in your kitchen for extra drinks. Sure, it's enough for you and your family but if you have a sudden influx of a dozen or so people you're going to need more room.

You can save some of that room that cans and bottles take up by having a beverage refrigerator. You'll probably be able to buy even more varieties of drinks to cater to more of your guests - as well as have room for your favorites!

Even if you don't entertain it can just be nice to have another fridge close by when you're playing games or watching movies. Rather than needing to get up and go to the kitchen and miss something, you can have the drink of your choice ready and waiting for you.

Better Designs and Control

It's true, beverage refrigerators just look better! They often have sleek finishes and beautiful glass doors that can make them a statement piece in any part of the home. Let guests marvel at your new piece of technology in your living room or add luxury to your alcohol cabinet.

They are also designed with drinks in mind. This means the heights of shelves are more in line with drinks, and sometimes there are specialty racks. Some come with easy to pull out trays that make retrieving drinks easier than reaching back into the depths of a regular fridge.

Don't forget to pick up some great accessories as well. Make sure you have ice on hand with an ice maker

Efficiency

Of course, it's important to discuss one of the biggest selling points of a beverage refrigerator. It's not just that they use less energy and can save on your monthly bill compared to investing in a larger kitchen refrigerator or a second one. Rather, it's better for getting the drinks exactly to the temperature you want.

Maybe you like your drinks icy cold - but if you turned your entire refrigerator to that setting it could be bad for efficiency and also cause problems in some of your food. No one wants slightly frozen vegetables or milk with ice shavings.

Another nice thing about the design that helps you save energy is the glass doors. Rather than having to keep the door open while trying to decide, or making return trips, you can make your choice before opening the door. Those glass doors can help you keep track of your stock and reduce energy waste.

More Control

While we've already discussed temperature the controls on a beverage refrigerator can't be beaten. Controlling the temperature means uniform results in your drinks. You don't have to worry that one drink will be warmer because it's on the bottom of the shelf, these fridges' entire purpose is to make your drinks perfect for your preferences.

The Cons

Of course, beverage refrigerators are an added expense - although it might not be as much as you assume as they tend to be more efficient. They are also far more specialized. This means they're probably not ideal for food and a regular beverage refrigerator may not have the exact features you want if you specifically like beer or wine.

Wine in particular often desires different temperatures depending on the kind of wine it is. There are separate wine refrigerators to help you with that area.

Beverage refrigerators are also not great for space-saving. If you live in a very small house you should consider whether an extra fridge is how you should use the space, especially given various ventilating needs.

The Verdict

Whether or not a beverage refrigerator is right for you will depend entirely on your lifestyle and desires. Now that you know what to look for it's a good idea to make a list of priorities.

A beverage refrigerator doesn't have to be seen as frivolous if it makes your enjoyment of drinks or ease of entertaining better. A little taste of luxury can give you more happy moments over time than cramming cans into an already full kitchen fridge, that's for sure!
